This page opens with a $10,000 sample portfolio so you can see a before-and-after rebalance right away — replace the numbers with your own whenever you're ready. Edit any current value or target percentage directly in the table — every total, bar, and change figure recalculates as you type. Green columns are your current holdings, blue columns are your targets. Change ($) shows what to buy (teal, positive) or sell (rust, negative) to reach target. Templates size themselves to a $100,000 sample investment and always include a Cash sleeve — apply one, then edit the dollar amounts to match your actual portfolio. Use Save file to download your portfolio as a .json file you can Load again later — nothing is stored automatically. If your target percentages add up to over 100%, the target fields and the totals strip turn red — trim another asset's target to bring the column back to 100%.

About this rebalancing calculator

Portfolio rebalancing is the process of buying and selling assets to bring a portfolio back to its intended mix — for example, back to 60% stocks and 40% bonds after a market move has pushed it to 70/30. Left alone, a portfolio's allocation drifts over time as some assets grow faster than others, which quietly changes how much risk you're carrying.

This tool takes your current holdings and your target percentages and calculates the exact dollar amount to buy or sell in each asset to get back to target. It runs entirely in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or stored anywhere — closing the tab clears it, which is why the Save/Load buttons exist for keeping a copy between visits.

How it works

  1. Enter your current holdings. List each asset you own and its current dollar value in the Current ($) column.
  2. Set your target allocation. Decide what percentage of your total portfolio each asset should make up, or start from one of the suggested distribution templates.
  3. Read the Change ($) column. A positive, teal figure means buy that amount; a negative, rust-colored figure means sell that amount to reach your target.
  4. Export or save your plan. Download the results as a CSV, Excel, or PDF file, or save the whole portfolio as a .json file to pick up again later.

Frequently asked questions

Is my portfolio data sent anywhere?

No. All calculations happen locally in your browser using JavaScript. No holdings, dollar amounts, or asset names are transmitted to any server. Save and Load work by reading and writing a file directly on your own device.

How often should I rebalance?

Common approaches are a fixed schedule (e.g. once a year) or a threshold rule (rebalance when an asset drifts more than 5 percentage points from its target). There's no single right answer — it depends on your goals, tax situation, and how much drift you're comfortable with. This tool doesn't give personalized financial advice; it just does the arithmetic once you've decided on a target.

Do the suggested templates fit my situation?

The templates (60/40, Three-Fund, Aggressive Growth, Conservative, All-Weather) are commonly referenced starting points, not recommendations tailored to you. Your appropriate allocation depends on your time horizon, risk tolerance, and goals — consider speaking with a licensed financial advisor before acting on any allocation.
